In the 2013-14 season Liverpool will be looking to climb the Premier League ladder and finally return to the top four and Champions League football. However, they will need to first maneuver the Luis Suarez situation. At the time of writing Suarez is still a Liverpool player, but the most recent reports are quoting him as insisting that he be allowed to leave the club and be transferred to Arsenal.
Liverpool have made it a point to hold onto Suarez as long as possible, but I think he will be going sooner rather than later. Perhaps his transfer is what will start all the other rumors rolling forward. Liverpool have already picked up Iago Aspas as their number 9 striker and with Daniel Sturridge and Phillipe Coutinho they have players who can score goals. Aspas has showed his ability in preseason so far and could be an excellent replacement for Suarez.
Liverpool have made several other signings including midfielder Luis Alberto, defender Kolo Toure and goal keeper Simone Mignolet. They have plenty of quality players returning including young talents like Raheem Sterling and Andre Wisdom. If Jose Enrique can continue his form they have a solid defense along with an excellent option going forward on the wing.
Liverpool should be in good shape to push the top four, but will need to cut out the mistakes that cost them throughout last season. They need to start out the year solid defensively, which was something they failed to do in 2012-13. My prediction for Liverpool is a sixth place finish, but within touching distance of the top four, if they are able to keep Suarez. If they cannot do so, they might struggle to finish sixth and it will put them farther off the pace.
Liverpool will push the top teams even if they do lose Luis Suarez. They have some excellent young players as well as a good mix of veterans. The Reds have a strong setup going from back to front and adding players like Mignolet and Toure can only help strengthen their defense this term.
