Premier League Preview for Chelsea v Southampton along with Predictions for every result in the EPL. Follow up each match with results and video highlights posted later in the week.
Chelsea may have looked good against West Ham in their comfortable 3-0 win, but I would say that they should have done better than that. In the match they had 20 shots with eight of those on goal and seven of them blocked. This came with 55% possession and an 83% pass completion rate. In their midweek Champions League match they went down 0-1 at FC Basel and were rather poor. Tactically, Mourinho has struggled to get the most out of this team and seems to still be looking for his best eleven. Southampton is, perhaps, not the team to experiment against and Chelsea could get punished if they give Southampton the respect they deserve.
Southampton has had a fantastic start to the season, but tripped up against Arsenal thanks to two defensive mistakes. Artuc Boruc’s awful mistake to start the match definitely interrupted any tactical strategies that Pochettino may have laid out for them. Against Arsenal they had 51% possession, but only a 77% pass success rate, 10 shots taken and only four on goal with five of those blocked. Against Chelsea, they will need to do more with the ball and not give up silly goals through penalties or foolish mistakes.
My prediction is for a low scoring draw. I will say that I am tempted to predict a Southampton win considering Chelsea’s recent Champions League loss and their recent Premier League form. That said, I think that Chelsea will be able to do enough to get a draw, especially since they are undefeated in their last 15 home matches and remain undefeated at home under Mourinho in 38 Premier League games.
