In this weekend’s preview for Southampton v Tottenham read up on my prediction along with analysis for the match in week 17 of the Premier League. Included with each match preview are statistics and betting odds to help with your own predictions.
Southampton have now gone five matches without a win and have slipped from third place down to ninth within in a matter of weeks. While they do still have a good defensive record, it has been more shaky lately, especially after losing Artur Boruc to injury. In the last six matches they have allowed eleven goals while scoring nine. Holding Manchester City to a 1-1 draw was certainly a good result and last weekend’s 1-1 draw away to Newcastle could also be seen as a step in the right direction. A Southampton win this Sunday would see them go level on points with Tottenham, but move above them in the table on goal difference.
Tottenham have had a rough week. Last weekend’s 5-0 home loss to Liverpool in the Premier League was followed up by the sacking of Andre Villas Boas which, in turn, was followed by a home 2-1 loss to West Ham United in the Capital One Cup. Their two recent massive defeats of 6-0 to City and 5-0 to Liverpool have pushed their goals allowed up to 21, but their real struggle has been in scoring goals. The stat of the last weekend was that Luis Suarez now has more goals (after missing the first four matches of the season) than the whole of Tottenham Hotspur who now have just 15. They are the only team in the top ten to have scored so few goals. If Spurs are going to turn around their season they will need to start getting forward and creating better scoring chances as well as actually finishing the ones they get, after all, they do have the second most shots per game with 17.4
I’m predicting a draw between these two upper mid table teams. Tottenham did win their last two away Premier League matches and this could be the week that things start to really click, but it’s difficult to see them getting much more than a draw. It is also hard to see Southampton getting more than a draw considering the injuries they are currently enduring, particularly to Boruc, Nathaniel Clyne and Victor Wanyama.
Betting Odds: Saints win: 2.50-2.60; Draw: 3.28-3.40; Spurs win: 2.89-3.10
Form: Southampton (W, L, L, L, D, D) Spurs (L, L, D, W, W, L)
