Germany vs Algeria Preview and World Cup Predictions

World Cup 2014 Predictions

Monday’s afternoon match sees Algeria take on Germany. As winners of Group G Germany are favorites to dominate this match and advance to the next round. Algeria are hoping to provide a shock upset.

Germany vs Algeria – Monday, June 30 @ 4pm

There is some history between these teams with Germany and Austria agreeing to play to a 1-0 Germany win in the 1982 World Cup group stages, thus allowing them to both go through and knock out Algeria.

Germany has not been dominant this World Cup, but has put in team efforts to scrape out their results. The majority of their 7 goals came in the first match against a poor 10 man Portugal that ended 4-0. Still, they qualified easily enough.

Germany made it through by playing well as a team and not relying too much on any one player. They have stuck with a system and that system has worked. They have often dominated possession and use a slow and methodical build-up to pressure their opponents seeking to find that one moment to capitalize on.

Algeria just barely made it to their first round of 16 place. After going down a goal to Russia they fought back and got the equalizer they needed to take second just ahead of Russia. They have proved to be a tricky opponent and one that does not need a lot of possession to get a result. They have average 42% possession which includes the match against Belgium in which they had just 33%. They do have several technical players that can produce some quality.

My prediction is a Germany win to set up a probable Germany vs France quarter-final. Germany’s talent and quality should be enough to get them through despite some deficiencies in defense. Algeria will not make it easy and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them get a goal. At the same time, Germany is at a different level from the competition that Algeria has faced so far.

Predicted Starting Lineups:

Germany (4-3-3): Neuer; Howedes, Hummels, Mertesacker, Boateng; Kroos, Lahm, Schweinsteiger; Gotze, Muller, Ozil

Algeria (4-2-3-1): M’Bolhi; Mesbah, Bougherra, Halliche, Mandi; Bentaleb, Medjani; Djabou, Brahimi, Feghouli; Slimani
