Can United Win the League With This Defense

Chris Smalling FPL DefenderCan Manchester United win the Premier League title with this defensive lineup? I believe that they can. I recently wrote an article for World Soccer Talk discussing the flaws and positives regarding Manchester United’s current center back pairings.

You can head over to World Soccer Talk to read the article in its entirety:

Center-back concerns could derail Manchester United’s title bid

At the moment Manchester United continue to be in talks with a few defenders, most notably Nicholas Otamendi, while the most recent reports state that the Sergio Ramos deal is dead.
This leaves Louis van Gaal with his current center backs of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Jonny Evans, Tyler Blackett, and Paddy McNair. All these defenders are still very young and ready to fulfill their potential, but they are still lacking in confidence and leadership.
For fantasy Premier League managers, this is still important information to remember. There is some value to be had in Manchester United’s center backs with Chris Smalling being the most expensive at £6.0. He was also the highest scoring United defender last season, but only the 37th best defender in FPL scoring.
A healthy back line will make all the difference for Manchester United title bid, but I do believe they have what it takes with this current crop. This is especially true if Chris Smalling can continue to build his qualities as a leader at the back.
If you are looking for some fantasy gambles, look no further than this United defense. Chris Smalling still has a great chance to put in some solid FPL points, but Luke Shaw is probably the best bet to go with, particularly at just £5.5.Matteo Darmian is another to look at picking up, if he can get enough games, at £5.5.
There are plenty of options in this Manchester United defense and most of them have had a year of instruction under Louis van Gaal’s tutelage. It is now time for them to fulfill their potential and win the Premier League title back for the Red Devils.
